How to wick test a container candle: a step-by-step guide (soy GW 464 and beyond)

Container candles live or die on wick choice. The vessel diameter, the wax, the fragrance load and the dye all shift the answer. This guide walks the exact protocol we use in the studio, from picking the first candidate wick through the four-burn test, worked end-to-end on Golden Wax 464 soy in a 3-inch (76 mm) jar.

Step 1. Measure the vessel

Wick sizing starts from the internal diameter of the vessel at the widest melt-pool line, not the rim. Use a caliper. For a straight-sided 3-inch jar you should read close to 76 mm across.

Record vessel wall thickness too. Thin glass loses heat faster and needs a marginally hotter wick to reach a full pool.

Step 2. Pick a candidate wick from the chart

Cross-reference the diameter with the wax family. For soy container blends at a 3-inch diameter, start with a CD 16, an ECO 14, or an LX 24. For GW 464 specifically the studio starting point is CD 16 at 8 percent fragrance load. Always test one wick range up and one down at the same time so you have a comparison.

  • Soy container (GW 464, GB 464): CD 12 to CD 18 across 2.25 to 3.25 inch.
  • Coconut soy blends (CBL 130, Coco 83): ECO 12 to ECO 16.
  • Paraffin container: LX 20 to LX 26.

Step 3. Pour identical test candles

Pour at least three candles per wick candidate, all from the same batch of wax and fragrance. Same pour temperature, same cure time, same vessel. Skipping this is how testers end up chasing wick issues that are really pour issues.

Cure a minimum of 7 days for soy, 48 hours for paraffin, before test burning. A short cure understates hot throw and flatters the wrong wick.

Step 4. Run the four-burn test

Burn 1 is 2 hours: the melt pool should reach the vessel wall. If not, size up.

Burn 2 is 3 hours, 24 hours later: pool depth should be 8 mm to 12 mm. Mushroom under 3 mm.

Burn 3 is 4 hours: vessel outside temperature must stay under 60°C.

Burn 4 is a full burn down: track residual wax, final wick condition, and any hangup on the walls.

Step 5. Worked example on GW 464

3 inch straight-sided jar, GW 464, 8 percent fragrance load, no dye. Starting wicks: CD 14, CD 16, CD 18.

Burn 1: CD 14 tunneled to 55 mm, CD 16 reached the wall at 1 h 50, CD 18 reached the wall at 1 h 30 but flame was over 40 mm.

Burn 3: CD 16 held vessel temperature at 54°C; CD 18 pushed 68°C and the label warmed. CD 14 stayed cool but tunneled worse.

Decision: CD 16. Ship it, then retest whenever the fragrance load, dye load, or wax lot changes.

Common mistakes

The mistakes that cost testers weeks:

  • Testing a single wick size instead of a bracket of three.
  • Ignoring cure time and blaming the wick.
  • Not photographing every 30 minutes, so the mushroom pattern is forgotten.
  • Changing wax lot mid test and treating the results as one dataset.
